History Museum Offers Children’s Workshops

The Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum has another great round of history workshops for kindergarten through 4th grade children this summer. The Terrific Tuesday programs are held in the museum classroom at 225 N. Cache from 11:00 a.m. to noon. Brenda Roberts, Youth Education Coordinator for the museum, and talented volunteers lead children through a series of memorable and educational programs that include storytelling and the completion of a history craft.

Here’s the line-up. June 19: “Jacks, Marbles, & Pick Up Stix” highlights the games that settlers’ kids played. A storyteller demonstrates turn of the century games, and then participants try their hand at old-fashioned game playing.

July 10: “Beads, Bells, and Bones” explores the art of American Indian clothing. Students sit in front of a tee-pee tying decorations on their own Indian shirts.

July 24: “Squares and Farmhouses” features a quilt maker who shares stories and quilt-making tips. Kids personally design and then create a “Tie-me-up” quilt during the class.

August 7: “Belts and Bracelets” includes a demonstration by a saddle maker and leatherworker. Participants should be ready to make some creative noise hammering a design into leather.

August 21: “Soup to Smores” invites kids to don an apron and cook outside with a chuckwagon master who shares secrets of cowboy cooking. Bring a can of your favorite veggie or fruit for St. John’s Food Cupboard.

Terrific Tuesday classes are $5 per child or $10 per family. Adult participation is not necessary but pre-registration is required due to class limit of 15. Last summer these classes filled quickly. Please contact Brenda Roberts, 733-2414 x 201.
