Monday, October 28, 11:30a – 1p Mural Unveiling
Join artist Nanibah Chacon (Diné [Navajo] and Chicana Artist) with Jackson Hole Public Art and History Jackson Hole for the unveiling of her new mural on the west side of the Jackson Hole History Museum.
The mural – created in consultation with Lynette St. Clair Shoshone language preservationist – brings attention to Shoshone Language (Newe Daygwap) and recognizes its importance as a cultural knowledge essential to Sosoree Newe (Shoshone Peoples) and their preservation of life and culture. It is titled Damma Newadaygwap Gay Nasoowazeet | Never Forget Our Language.
The event will open with light fare from Healthy Being catering and live music by Young Sky Nation. Remarks will begin at 12 p.m. including a welcome from Wyoming Representative, Liz Storer, presentation of the Stand for the Arts award to JH Public Art from Ovation TV and Charter Communications Inc., remarks by Lynette St. Clair, and the official opening of the new mural by artist, Nanibah Chacon.
The mural depicts a design of Shoshone beadwork pattern and text woven together, to signify that language and culture do not live separate from one another. Rose bead patterns are scattered through the design: a popular Shoshone beading motif, reminding us of hope, rebirth and the ability and tenacity to nurture and witness growth.
At this celebration, Jackson Hole Public Art will receive a $10,000 Stand For The Arts Award from Ovation TV, America’s premier arts network, and partner Charter Communications, Inc. to support this highly visible exterior artwork produced in collaboration with History Jackson Hole.
The mural is funded in part with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and with generous support from Mary Armour, Agnes Bourne, Petria and Scott Fossel, Leslye and David Hardie, Kate Jensen, Carrie F. Kirkpatrick DA Fund of CFJH, Marshall and Veronique Parke, Katrina and Brandon Ryan, Christy Walton, Community Foundation of Jackson Hole, History Jackson Hole, Wyoming Cultural Trust Fund, Charter Communications and Ovation TV, The Alpine House.
