History Museum Hosts Contest for Children

The Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum is hosting a naming and coloring contest for children ages 6-11. The museum needs names for two young historians—a boy and a girl—and a pika mascot that will be featured in the organization’s new activity book. The contest begins on April 4 and ends on April 18.

Staff is developing the newspaper for families with children who visit the museum beginning this May. The newspaper, entitled The Junior Historian, will include interactive games, puzzles, a journal, and more, for a variety of ages. Some of the activities are tailored to enhance the museum experience while other activities can be finished at home or in the car. After completing a certain number of activities, children will be awarded personalized badges by museum staff.

The entry form includes both contests and may be picked up at the Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum, 225 N. Cache, in the lobby, museum store, or the administrative office. Children are invited to color the drawing of the two historians and the pika mascot and/or provide a naming entry for the three characters. Children will also be asked to share one or two sentences about their name submissions and why they represent Jackson Hole’s history.

Please drop off your entry at the museum by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18. Junior Historian and mascot names will be judged by originality and creativity but must be based on people in Jackson Hole history. In the event of a duplicate entry, the children’s writing may be used as a tie-breaker. A museum store $25 gift certificate will be awarded to each winner. Three coloring contest winners will be selected, one from each of the following age groups: 6-7, 8-9, and 10-11. First place coloring contest winner receives a $25 gift certificate; the child’s art work may be featured on the cover of the activity newspaper. Second and third place winners will receive a $10 certificate.

Contest winners will be announced and gift certificates awarded on Tuesday, May 15, at 6:00 p.m. The event will be held at the Jackson Hole Historical Society and Museum, 225 N. Cache, in the main exhibition gallery.
